Apex Legends Best Characters & Legends Guide – Apex Legends has eight playable characters. You start the game off with six of them unlocked. The other two can be purchased with Apex Coins or Legend Tokens. In Apex Legends, your characters are called….legends. This is one of the aspects that sets the game apart from its competitors. It has a diverse and generous helping of characters and classes to choose from. It’s not hard to see why the game is so popular and we feel that this is only the beginning. It’s been stated before that Respawn (Apex Legends’ developer) has a ten-year plan for the game. So you’re not wrong if you’re expecting Apex Legends to add even more Legends in the near future.
The problem with diversity is it often presents an overabundance of choices. In other words, having too much choice can be a bad thing. This is what some people call “first world problems”. You don’t want to make the mistake of choosing your character based solely off their looks. You need to understand their skills, abilities, class and match them according to your own playing style.
If you’re playing Apex Legends in a team, you need to understand your role in the context of your team. Thus, you need to choose a character in a class that benefits and works for the team. Yes, you’re here to have fun but constantly losing because your team is tactically uncoordinated is no fun (unless you’re a sadomasochist).
Winning requires a balance of attack and defense. That’s why we felt that it was important to compile this guide so you can have a detailed overview of each of the characters. Hopefully, this will make your character selection a whole lot easier. We’ve ranked each of their characters according to their skills, abilities, and importance.

Best Characters in Apex Legends
We’d rank Lifeline as one of the most essential Legends in any team. She is your standard healer or medic. She has one of the best skill kits in the game which revolve around supporting her teammates through healing and providing them with gear. As her passive ability, she automatically creates a shield when reviving teammates while also shortening the time needed to use healing items. Healing items are 25% faster to use when you have Lifeline as part of your team.
As her tactical ability, she can drop a D.O.C Heal Drone to heal herself or all three members of your squad simultaneously. This is can be a lifesaver when you’re pinned down under heavy fire and you need a little boost.
During a gunfight, she can path herself up quickly in tight situations especially if you use a drone in combination with your healing items. This allows your team to switch from defense to attack quite quickly and fluidly.
With her ultimate ability, she can drop a care package from the sky that holds three pieces of loot which range from defensive equipment to weapon attachments. This is great for providing much needed high-quality gear to struggling teammates. It could really sway the direction in which a match or shoot out is going. It can be a real game changer, especially in the opening stages of the game. You can even use it as a deployable cover in the later rounds of a game. Lifeline is extremely useful for teams and can hold her own in any skirmish. [Lifeline Guide]

Currently one of the most popular characters in the game, especially for new players. It’s not hard to see why. Bangalore is your traditional attack character with one of the most devastating ultimate abilities of them all.
Bangalore is the only character in Apex Legends that can carry smoke grenades and use them to produce smoke clouds for cover. These can be extremely vital in a clash. They can be used to buy time, retreat or quickly create a cover so you can revive a downed teammate. She can hold up to two smoke canister charges and they charge up relatively fast.
Her passive ability (Double Time) allows her to double her speed when she’s shot while sprinting. This vastly increases her chances of escaping from any hairy situation or tough gunfights. It can help her find better cover or re-position herself on the battlefield. Paired with this ability and her smoke launcher, she can be both a good defensive and attacking character. This makes her a very efficient fragger.
Earlier, we mentioned that she probably has the most devastating ultimate ability of them all. With Rolling Thunder, she can summon a volley of rockets around the flare she throws. Upon impact, the rockets latch onto the ground and explode after a brief delay. Players caught in the explosion take damage and become dazed. It’s a great crowd control ability that can draw your enemies out from their hiding spots or secure areas. But you have to use her ultimate ability mindfully because they affect every player on the field including you and your teammates. They also cover a large distance. She works well with Bloodhound and the Threat Detector weapon attachment.

Tactical Ability: Smoke Launcher – Fire a smoke canister that explodes into a cloud of thick smoke on impact.
Passive Ability: Double Time – Taking fire while sprinting makes you move faster for a brief time.
Ultimate Ability: Rolling Thunder – By throwing a flare, call in an artillery strike that slowly creeps across the landscape. Rockets lodge themselves into the ground before exploding. [Bangalore Guide]
Wraith is in contention with Bangalore as one of the most popular characters in the game. She’s considered to be one of the strongest characters in the game if you know how to use her. She’s the ‘rogue’ type in Apex Legends and she has two very powerful abilities. She can use her tactical ability (Into the Void) to gain immunity to damage and increase her movement speed. Although this lasts a short time, if you’re smart you can use it to make a quick getaway or flank and catch opposition off-guard.
Her passive ability (Voices from the void) is similar to Spiderman’s spidey sense. It warns Wraith (or the player controlling her) when an enemy is aiming or looking at her. This can be used to scout out and get a general idea where enemies are, especially in large open areas.
Her ultimate ability (Dimensional Drift) allows her to open two portals that link two different locations. A portal is opened upon the first cast and Wraith is granted a movement speed buff; cast the ability again to place the second portal. It’s actually a great tool for your entire team, as they can all use the portal to quickly travel between locations. Keep in mind that enemies can also use the portals too. This ability has a plethora of applications, it just depends on how smart and savvy you and your team are. Some examples include: scouting with the rift to either escape any danger you meet or allow your teammates to quickly join you when an area is secure, and making your escape if your team is stuck between two or more teams.

Since she’s a rogue type and is practically independent. Wraith doesn’t have to rely on teammates as much so she’s ideal for solo play.
Tactical Ability: Into the Void – Enter and quickly traverse through void space, keeping you safe from all damage for a short amount of time. You cannot perform any other action while in the void.
Passive Ability: Voices from the Void – A voice warns you when danger approaches. As far as you can tell, it’s on your side.
Ultimate Ability: Dimensional Rift – Link two locations with portals for 60 seconds; gain increased movement speed between portal casts and your entire team can use them. [Wraith Guide]
Mirage is a trickster geared towards offensive play. He uses decoys to confuse and trick enemies. He can use his tactical ability, ‘Psyche Out’, deploys a holographic decoy that turns in the direction that the player cast the skill. This ability could be extremely useful in the game. For instance, you could use it to scout and lure enemy players out. You could also use it to cover a flank. The ability also has a very low cooldown period, granting Mirage the power to create decoys almost at will.
Mirage’s ultimate ability, ‘Vanishing Act’ allows him to deploy a number decoys that stand still around him, while he turns completely invisible for a short amount of time. It’s great for escaping any particularly hairy situations. It can also be used by Mirage to reposition himself and flank enemy players on the battlefield.
Mirage can work well within the synergy of his team by using his decoys as a tool to draw enemy fire. This can inform the rest of his team as to the positioning of his enemies. He’s an excellent fragger due to the quality of his kit.
Ever heard of the saying “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”? Well, players who’ve encountered Mirage before may be wise to his tricks. If you’re using Mirage to go up against experienced players, you’ll need to refine your tactics and user your decoys creatively. Mirage is a locked character that can be unlocked by purchasing him with Legend Token or Apex Coins.
Tactical Ability: Psyche Out – Send out a holographic decoy to confuse the enemy.
Passive Ability: Encore! – Automatically drop a decoy and cloak for five seconds when knocked down.
Ultimate Ability: Vanishing Act – Deploy a team of Decoys to distract enemies while you cloak. [Mirage Guide]
What’s a multiplayer battle royale first-person shooter without a tank? Gibraltar is Apex Legend’s tank and he’s suitably the largest Legend in the game.
Gibraltar is a strong attacker due to his Passive Ability. When aiming down sights, Gibraltar deploys a gun shield that protects a large portion of his upper body. He can also deploy a very large dome to shield him and his teammates from incoming fire. You should bear in mind that the dome will block all fire, both enemy and friendly. Using the dome, Gibraltar can revive downed teammates and/or heal up safely, even when fighting in large open areas.
His Ultimate Ability is also devastating, as it can put an enemy’s push to a complete stop and corner weakened squads for easy finishes. Gibraltar’s downside is that his size also makes him a much bigger target, especially when his Gun shield isn’t deployed or when it is shattered.

Although Gibraltar’s abilities are very useful in a number of situations, his defensive kit isn’t too appealing for a fast-paced game that revolves around flanking and constantly repositioning.
Tactical Ability: Dome of Protection – Throw down a dome-shield that blocks attacks for 15 seconds.
Passive Ability: Gun Shield – Aiming down sights deploys a gun shield that blocks incoming fire.
Ultimate Ability: Defensive Bombardment – Call in a concentrated mortar strike on a marked position. [Gibraltar Guide]
Bloodhound is one of the more interesting characters in the game. His skill kit revolves around tracking and effectively locating enemies. He makes an excellent scout due to his ability to track enemies through an assortment of clues such as footprints.
Bloodhound’s tactical ability (Eye of the Allfather), reveals enemies and clues in a small circle around him. The problem with this ability is it only works in a small area and enemies can actually see when you’re casting it. Where this ability is most useful is when you’re tracking down that last member of a squad or when you know when an enemy squad is in your building.
Bloodhound shines through with his passive and ultimate abilities. He spots fresh footprints and even sees how old they are with his passive ability. Using the information from the prints, Bloodhound can then generalize which direction the enemies went and how far they are.
His ultimate ability, ‘Beast of the Hunt’, grants Bloodhound increased movement speed and turns his vision black-and-white while highlighting enemy Legends in red. This ability is an incredible scouting tool that allows Bloodhound to spot distant enemies with ease. As this ability comes with a very long skill duration and a short skill cool-down, you don’t need to be too conservative with this ability. The increased movement speed and the ability to more easily spot your enemies can also give you an edge in gunfights.

One element that makes Bloodhound less desirable to play solo is that you need to be able to communicate with your team to make full use of his kit. Your teammates can’t see the tracks that you are seeing, so make sure to actively feed them information.
Tactical Ability: Eye of the Allfather – Briefly reveal hidden enemies, traps, and clues throughout structures in front of you.
Passive Ability: Tracker – See tracks left behind by your foes.
Ultimate Ability: Beast of the Hunt – Enhances your senses, allowing you to move faster while highlighting your prey. [Bloodhound Guide]
Pathfinder is beloved for his vertical mobility. He also has the highest skill ceiling of any legend in the game.
His Tactical Ability is a powerful tool that allows for fast movement and lets Pathfinder reach places that other Legends would struggle to get to. He can also gain insane momentum through his Grappling Hook to catapult himself across the air at incredible speeds. Combined with his Ultimate Ability, Pathfinder has the potential to be a great scout or flanker as he is the best Legend at utilizing on high ground.
In the hands of an experienced player, Pathfinder could be a monster of a Legend; flanking with his Grappling Hook and providing his teammates with the utility to effectively traverse through an area. However, as a big portion of his kit is situational, and many hours of practice is required to perfect his Grappling Hook.
Pathfinder’s Zipline Gun allows him and his teammates to traverse a location in next to no time, and it can be a real game changer when used correctly. What makes Pathfinder unappealing for most players is that his passive and ultimate abilities aren’t don’t provide much in terms of straight combat. His skills are pretty much situation as they rely on nearby terrain.

Tactical Ability: Grappling Hook – Grapple to get to out-of-reach places quickly.
Passive Ability: Insider Knowledge – Scan a survey beacon to reveal the ring’s next location.
Ultimate Ability: Zipline Gun – Create a zip line for everyone to use. [Pathfinder Guide]
Caustic is the second locked character on this list. Just like Mirage, he can be unlocked with the use of Legend Tokens or Apex coins. As his name implies, his character and skill kit is themed around handling poisonous or caustic gas to suppress and destroy his enemies.
His Tactical Ability (Nox Gas Trap) is the only trap ability in the game (at the time of writing this article, it was) and it can be an extremely useful tool. Placing it near narrow areas can help cover your flanks.
Much like mines, the traps are triggered when enemy Legends walk close to it or when the traps are shot. If you’re playing as Caustic, you can check your map to see whether your toxic canisters are still intact. The best thing about the Nox Gas Trap is it has a relatively low cooldown and Caustic can hold up to 3 canister charges. So you don’t have to use them sparingly.
A big downside of Caustic is his “deadly” gas is very easy to get out of and it doesn’t really deal any significant damage. So it’s practically been misnamed because it isn’t deadly at all. His passive ability is only useful if your opponent decides to commit suicide and sit inside your gas for whatever reason. His Ultimate Ability is just an upgraded version of his Tactical Ability.

To be perfectly clear, we see no point in purchasing Caustic unless you’re a completionist.
Caustic’s character design is fantastic, but the math just isn’t there to keep him competitive against the other stronger Legend options.
Tactical Ability: Nox Gas Trap – Drop canisters that release deadly Nox gas when shot or triggered by enemies.
Passive Ability: Nox Vision – Allows you to see enemies through your gas.
Ultimate Ability: Nox Gas Grenade – Blankets a large area in Nox Gas. [Caustic Guide]
