The Last of Us 2 Release Date, News, Rumors and Trailer

The Last of Us 2 Release Date, News, Rumors and Trailer  – At the time of writing this, it had been six years since the original Last of Us came out. Since then it has received new DLCs and been re-released and polished for the Playstation 3. Both fans and critics consider The Last of Us 2 to be a masterpiece. Naughty Dog really knows how to make Sony PlayStation classics.

For fans who have been waiting for a sequel, Naughty dog announced one at E3 in 2016. The sequel was dubbed The Last of US Part 2. A trailer was released later that year at the PlayStation experience.

The Last Of Us 2016 Trailer

Even with the announcement and eventual trailer, Naughty Dog and Sony had yet to announce a concrete release date for the trailer. However, it had been revealed that Naughty Dog had been working on the game since 2014. At the time of writing this, it was 2019, which means that the game has been in development for at least five years.

Just when people were starting to think that the game was nothing more than a rumor or an elaborate prank by Naughty Dog, a gameplay trailer was released at E32018.

The Last Of Us 2 Release Date PS4 & Gameplay Reveal

The above gameplay is a mix between a traditional cinematic trailer and a gameplay trailer. To accompany this, Sony also released actual demo gameplay.

This was good news. The problem was Sony still hadn’t announced an actual concrete release date for the game. The fact that there was game footage and actual gameplay meant that the game’s release was neigh.

The last of us 2 was announced to released back in 2016, but no specific date is set to release so far. But it could be released in late 2019 or earlier 2020 (more likely scenario). And of course, like its previous edition, The Last Of Us 2 will be PS (Play Station) exclusive.

The Story?

The game is set in the same post-apocalyptic setting as its predecessor but this time, it is set five years after the first Last of Us. Players control an older version of Ellie who comes into conflict with a mysterious cult.

The story is written by Neil Druckmann who revealed that while love was a central theme of the first Last of Us, the second would be centered on hate. Writers can be very vague sometimes.

The Last Of Us 2 – Gameplay

As noted previously, the game is written by Neil Druckmann (who wrote the previous game) and Halley Gross. Tony Baker and Ashley Johnson return to their roles as a Joel and Ellie, respectively. Gustavo Santaolalla returns to arrange and perform the score.

Another reason why The Last of Us Part 2 may have taken this long to develop is because the original gamer director, Bruce Straley left in 2017 and was replaced by Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau.

The Gameplay seems largely unchanged but improved. It still focuses on stealth and scavenging. While the first trailer revealed the return of Ellie and Joel, the second revealed four new characters: Yara (played by Victoria Grace), Lev (Ian Alexander), Emily (Emily Swallow), and an unnamed character played by Laura Bailey.

Druckmann stated that these new characters are integral to the next journey. Halley Gross, the sequels co-writer is known for her work on the HBO sci-fi drama, Westworld. This is important because the story is an intrinsic part of the Last of Us. It will be interesting to see her influence on the next Last of Us.

There are also some rumors that the Last of Us Part II will be set up in an open-world. But from the looks of the latest trailer, that seems unlikely. It’s not unfortunate though since the Last of us is a very story driven game and most linear story driven games work better in levels. Although, it’s not an open-world game the TLOU pt 2 seems to have the promise of more freedom and choice, at least that’s what we’ve gathered from the trailer. So there could be more ways to approach a level and more optional areas to discover and explore.

 Accolades

The original TLOU is one of the most awarded games in gaming history, with over 240 gaming awards. It’s no surprise that the sequel has received some awards even before it has actually been released. So far the PlayStation blog has awarded The Last of Us Part II Most Anticipated Game of The Year (2017). It has also won the Most Wanted Game at the 2017 Golden Joystick Awards as well as Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards. It’s also received a Special Commendation for Sound and Graphics from the Game Critics Awards.

The 2018 trailer we shared earlier, where Ellie kisses another woman was praised for its standard of animation. It’s very difficult to animate kisses and make them look realistic and believable. Critics also praised the improved graphics, enemy API and combat. The Game was also nominated for “The Most Wanted Game” at the 2-18 Gold Joystick Awards and won the award for “Most Anticipated Games” at the Gamer’s Choice awards.

Final Word

Although we still have no concrete release date, it seems that the Last of Us Part II will be released somewhere near the end of 2019 or early 2020, just before the release of the next-gen PlayStation 5. I doubt we’ll be disappointed by it. Naughty Dog has been creating well-crafted games since their Crash Bandicoot days.
